Kitchen Remodeling in NYC

Ever owned a New York City Apartment? What was one room that you wish you could have remodeled? Well for a lot of us the room we spend a lot of time in is the kitchen, and in New York City Apartments, kitchen sizes are on the small side!

A couple of years ago I renovated a tiny kitchen, it was literally 5 x 5 square meters, and throughout the project I was completely convinced that the finished product would come in well under budget - it didn't. When you take in to consideration cabinet construction, fitting, shelving, plumbing, tiling, painting and accessories - even if it is a DIY job, the dollars keep rising (as did my blood pressure at the time).

In New York City we are lucky to be surrounded by an enormous amount of well-designed, functional and relatively inexpensive home furnishing and design products. The only real problem to be figured out is what style will suit your budget and where to begin!

So let's begin in the kitchen! Making the best use of a small space is tough, but definitely achievable and well worth the initial planning you put into it. Smaller spaces ju5B4st mean that you need to think a little bit more creatively. Probably one of the main intentions behind redesigning a small space is to mystify the visitor with how big it looks post renovation, while of course improving the functionality of it.

One of the best designer tips for making a kitchen look larger is to think about choice of colour. Keeping walls and ceilings light and bright is always a top tip, especially if you have no windows. To enhance the feeling of floor space, sometimes it is better to replace those funky colored floor tiles with something simple and durable. You can get some pretty tough vinyl products these days if you're on a tight budget and don't think you need to necessarily choose white all the time, try other slightly neutral colors like wheat or cream. Sticking to the basics, choosing light cabinetry and opting for a darker bench top will create a flow between the walls, flooring and bench space and create an illusion of space. Of course there are always exceptions to the rules and in some instances if there is enough light created through your flooring, cabinetry and good lighting then a darker background on the walls can also look warm and expansive without feeling cluttered.

A well functioning small sized kitchen should not only make you happier, but a lot more efficient when preparing those special dinners. The essentials to a kitchen are sometimes minimal but without things like adequa58Ate bench space and the correct placement of appliances you can become fairly dissatisfied pretty quickly. A general rule in any small kitchen is to keep things simple and functional. Think about buying kitchen appliances, such as the fridge or dishwasher, that are streamlined and will fit well in to limited designated spots, choose open shelving instead of closed cabinetry and if you decide to install cabinetry, ensure it has multi leveled capabilities.

Living in a small space also requires you to become a bit of a neat freak. Keep your bench tops free of papers and other objects that take up space, remember that you are trying to create a space for cooking not writing a term paper!

Remodeling small kitchens can be really fun. Once you have decided on your budget, commit to it and design a space that will meet all your needs.

Easy Guide to List Building

When you own an online business, you know how important it is to be having an always-maintained build list of e-mail addresses on your server. You know as a businessman that you need these addresses to potentially market your products to them at any given time. But what if these e-mail addresses on your built list begin to wane and diminish? What actions are you going to take to make sure that your perpetual source for prospective clients remains intact and working? Well, just like any otherwise moves to take, all you have to do is to re-build the list by capturing newer and fresher addresses through your marketing strategies. To build a responsive and actively participating list, here is what you can do:

Create an E-book. E-books are a good source of e-mail addresses because people would like to just read books. What is good about writing e-book is that it does not require too much time to create one since all you have to do is put a manual books content into your e-book. If there is one thing that you should work on getting an e-book, is to ensure that the quality of the e-book does not suffer.

Write article materials. Articles do not go obsolete as a source of feedback and traffic. Day to day, there are new topics that need to be discussed and talked about. When an article material is well written primarily based on facts, people just love to react on it.

Join forum channels. People who are on forum channel utilize this area to get some answers to some of their questions or inquiries. It is best then that you join this channel and participate and direct them to your landing page for further inquiries to capture their information.

DIY Home Flooring Improvement - Building a Floor Deck

It can sound complicated with the plethora of equipment needed. But if we actually think about it, the equipment is pretty easy to obtain. You will need basics such as your measuring tape, hammer and drill. A few dozen galvanized bolts and screws to hold the structure together, with the braces, joists and posts. You will also need to use concrete bags and gravel, thinner and stain to paint your deck with.

Home Design Software - First, take advantage of the latest technology, and utilize one of the home design software packages that are available. You have choices that can help with the materials and equipment needed, in the calculation of costs and the designs and even local building codes.

Material - Once the design of your deck is set, you'll need to consider materials. Good options are redwoods, cedar or pine in pressure treated sizes like 2 x 4's, 2 x 6's and 4 x 4. There are also several newer options. There are many composite materials on the market today that resemble wood in appearance and feel. Such materials will seem more costly in the beginning but it can give years to your deck's life span and is worth the initial outlay. In addition, they do16A5 not twist out of shape unlike wood and you need not stain it.

Foundation - The basics for a lasting deck. If you are uncertain about how to go about preparing the ground and pouring concrete, or making vertical anchors, you can look for professional help for this stage. Other than this, you should be able to tackle all other aspects of deck building with minimal assistance.

Pier Spacing - Check the building codes in your area to find out the recommended support pier spacing. Make your support distances equal to or less than the 8 or 12 foot length that most lumber is available in. It will be simpler for you as it reduces the number of cuts needed.

Sealing - Usually there are ledger boards that lay up against the house to support the beams (joists) under the walking surface. Sometimes they have a Z-shaped flashing that lays on the ledger board top and side surfaces, up against the house.

Metal flashing can twist out of shape in due time as temperature fluctuates even when it was set up properly. Do cover up screw holes to lessen the chances of moisture causing damage.

Space the ledger board away from the wall using metal washers. So, you might not have to remove siding and it can reduce moisture that can result in corrosion and mold.

Use Screws and Bolts - Instead of nails, use screws and bolts wherever you can. Almost all nails will eventually rust, and stain tends to not stick to them. Although they will also rust over time, screws will not become loose like most nails will.

Using screws, however, is more time consuming than simply pounding in nails. You can make your job faster utilizing a power screwdriver attachment on the hand drill.

No matter what methods you use to build your deck, careful design and attention to detail will always give you the best results. This will help you save hundreds in repair bills later on.

An Introduction to Brick Building

Fired clay bricks remain one of the most enduring building materials known to the world wide building industry. Some might argue that it is also one of the most beautiful and that it adds character to any building with its colour, strength and texture. Clay brick dates as far back as the Egyptian age and connects us with the history of our ancestors.

Being such a versatile building material and because of its very good climatic characteristics, it remains the material of choice for residential buildings in South Africa. Bricks have an excellent fire rating, it is weatherproof and has really good acoustic properties and is almost soundproof, and best of all it amount to only about 10 per cent of the total cost of a typical residential building. Homebuyers will almost always prefer to buy a house constructed out of clay brick as it does not deteriorate over time and has a higher resale value.

Bricks vary quite significantly in because of the diverse manufacturing processes and types of clay used in their manufacture in various regions. Often potential home builders make the mistake in thinking that all bricks are the same and there is no need to shop around for different finishes and colours. This can be costly as the quality of different brick manufacturers vary considerably as will also be reflected in the price. A very cheap brick might be of un-even size or may warp making building with them a lot more difficult.

Face brick

The use of face brick is often used in residential architecture for its low maintenance properties and often the aesthetics is overlooked completely. Face brick can be very aesthetically pleasing with its rustic look and a good architect might combine face brick with plastered areas to come to more a balanced aesthetic as face brick in its single form can be a bit overwhelming. When opting to build with face brick make sure you appoint a good builder with a good face brick portfolio as the jointing of a face brick wall can make or break the aesthetic of this type of construction. Also make sure you order sufficient bricks the first time as, because it being a natural material can vary noticeably per batch.

Cement bricks

These bricks are similar to a clay stock (plaster) brick but are more often used in regions where clay might be in short supply. There is usually not a big price difference between cement and clay plaster bricks and cement brick is mostly used as a substitute. When ordering cement bricks make sure that they are properly cured and dry before using them. If more that 5 per cent breaks upon delivery, have a knowledgeable person check the quality of the bricks.

Plaster (Stock) bricks

Cheaper than face bricks, a plaster brick still is manufactured to high standards to ensure uniformity of size and structure, but have to be plastered and painted thereby cancelling out the cost saving and has to be maintained at fairly regular intervals. Often great aesthetics can be achieved by combining plastered walls with face brick walls.

Building Vocabulary Through Activities

Studies show that people learn words best by engaging as many of the five senses as possible. Associating a new word with a smell, touch, taste, or sound helps us recall the word for later use. So in addition to reading on a daily basis and listening to speakers who use a different vocabulary than you do, you can add words to your working vocabulary list by exploring new activities.

The following suggested activities will boost your vocabulary by engaging more of your senses and putting you into word-rich environments.

1. Take a class, any class. Learn a new skill. The skill could be knitting or sport fishing, cooking or carpentry, dancing or playing an instrument. Choose something you are interested in and which requires you to use your hands. Each craft or skill will have its own vocabulary. There will be words to describe the equipment, the processes, and the materials. Since you will be doing something with your hands (and maybe more parts of your body as in dancing), you will trigger more activity in your brain than if you just read the words on a page. The increased activity will create more connections in your brain. Not only will you see the word, you will have an experience to tie to it. You will have paired the word with a motor memory (a physical process you have learned to do like knitting) and sensory memories about the material and tools you work with (like the feel of the knitting needles and yarn in your hands). The greater number of connections your brain is able to make with the word, the more likely it is that the word will become part of your working vocabulary.

2. Visit a museum. Childrens museums are a great choice because they often feature interactive displays. Another good option is a living museum where you can talk with a docent who can answer your questions about the exhibits. Many living museums (Colonial Williamsburg would be one example) have programs where you get to participate. Youll learn the words associated with the focus of the museum. Your brain will link the experience of the museum, the items you touched, the activities you participated in, and everything else your senses will record about the trip.

3. Go to the zoo. Youll find interesting animals with exotic names which originate from many different languages depending on where the animal normally lives. English is a living language which adopts foreign words to name things. The word yak, for instance, is from the Tibetan word gyak. You will also learn about each animals food and habitat requirements. Many zoos now present shows where a trainer works with an animal and explains about that animals particular needs and capabilities. Who can resist a cuddly koala supping on eucalyptus leaves? Once again, your mind will be absorbing the new words along with plenty of additional sensory information to link to the word memory.

4. Garden. The lexicon of gardening is rich with Latin-based words describing plants their names, the parts of the plant, and their life cycles. Latin provides the roots to many English words in the areas of law, science, and religion. The word vegetable for example originated in the Latin word vegetare meaning to enliven, bring to life, or quicken. The word flower came from the Latin word flos or floris meaning surprise! a flower. Understanding the Latin portions (prefixes, suffixes, and roots) of words can help you deduce the meaning of other words that are new to you. In addition to adding lovely flowers to your hall table or fresh vegetables to your kitchen table, gardening will add valuable words to your vocabulary.

Learning new words can be easier, more enjoyable, and result in better retention if you can use multiple senses in the word-learning process. So add a new activity to your life and youll soon master a whole new group of words!

Five Tips for Your Bathroom Remodeling Design

So it's always been your dream to have a bathroom remodeling design. After all, not everyone 1C81is entirely happy with having to live with a decades old bathroom style. If you want to see some changes in your bathroom now, take note of these basic remodeling design tips.

Stop and Take a Closer Look

When bathroom remodeling is the topic, one often thinks of ripping off fixtures. Who says, remodeling has to be strictly in this sense only? You might want to put this urge in check and take a good, long look at your bathroom. You might not need to rip everything apart especially if you are in a limited budget. Consider adding something to what you already have to create the illusion of having remodeled everything. You may, for example change your cabinets, mirrors, paint and shower curtains.

Set Your Budget

If you really want to have a total bathroom overhaul, then first set a budget. Once you have the exact figure you are willing to spend on your bathroom, you can go ahead and think of what you want to place in it. List the necessities first beginning with the toilet, sink and shower and then move on to the extra features you want to be added. List the prices of the things you want in your bathroom and refer to your budget. Crush out anything that threatens to overwhelm your budget.

Create Your Idea

After listing what you want, create an idea for your bathroom remodeling design. You don't have to be an architect or graphic artist to do this. All you need is a clear idea of what you want. Consider making a simple draft illustration of your ideal bathroom. You can also write down detailed and concrete descriptions of how you want your bathroom to look and feel like. Put all your ideas in an organized paper file for future reference.

Create Illusions

One thing to consider when designing is to use illusions. This is important if you do not want to end up remodeling the space outside of your bathroom too so you can accommodate all your wants. You can save on money, time and resources if you simply use what you have and make it look more than it really is. Putting in a lot of light for example or using light paint and tiles can make it seem as if you have a large bathroom despite the obviously limited space. You can also stay away from heavy hardwood accents and stick to sparse metallic designs for your small bathroom.

Find a Professional

Unless you are an expert yourself, you should always hire others to remodel for you. You might be better off with an all around contractor instead of hiring individual professionals. Your contractor can handle everything from making a blue print of your design to putting on the last tile. You can discuss your ideas and plans with your contractor and come up with a final design that will truly work.

You don't need to come up with a complicated bathroom remodeling design. All you need is a clear concept of what you want and a good remodeling professional.

Replacement or Retrofit Style Frame? Which is Right for You?

Last week I told you how to measure for your vinyl replacement windows when replacing aluminum windows. Now that you're ready to order your new vinyl replacement windows, we need to talk about the different frame style options available. In most of the country your choices are limited to either new construction or replacement frames. New construction frames come with a nailing fin to attach the frame to the studs during the construction of the new home. The replacement frame is basically the new construction frame minus the nailing fin.

But in the west, where stucco homes are common, manufacturers came up with a third type of frame called a retrofit frame. The retrofit frame has a fin about 2 inches wide, located flush with the outside face of the window. This is the best choice when replacing old windows, but not all jobs will accomodate a retrofit frame application. So let's discuss how to determine which frame is going to work for you.

If you have a stucco exterior, retrofit is the way to go. You install the new window from the outside, and the flush fin covers the old aluminum frame that you are going to leave in place. Then you screw the new window in using deck screws through the side channels as well as the top header. We will get into more detail on the actual installation in a future article. If you have a stucco exterior, but there is a wood trim around the opening of the window where the flush fin would normally 5B4go, you can still use the retrofit style frame. You would need to remove the wood surrounding the opening, install the retrofit window, then purchase and install new wood trim. The old trim will no longer fit since the replacement window frame dimensions will be several inches larger in width and height than the old window frame. Another option is to install the retrofit fin on top of the wood trim. You can do this as long as the depth from the face of the wood trim to the point in the house of the innermost portion of the old aluminum frame is less than 3 inches deep.

The reason is because a good quality retrofit window will have a 3 inch frame depth from the back of the flush fin to the innermost part of the frame. That innermost part needs to be further into the house than the innermost part of the aluminum frame so that the aluminum frame will be hidden after we apply the inside trim. What if you have brick around the window openings? Or siding? Then what? Well, if you can install the window against the face of the brick or siding and still have the innermost part of the vinyl frame be further into the home than the old frame, then you can use the retrofit style frame. If not, then you have to use the replacement style frame, then use trim to finish the outside.

The main point to remember when determining whether or not to use a retrofit frame or a standard replacement frame is that in order to use the retrofit frame ther536e needs to be less than 3 inches from the outside point where the flush fin will rest to the inside point in the room where the old frame ends. If it's less than 3 inches, go with the retro, more than 3 inches, use the replacement frame and add trim to the outside in lieu of the flush fin.

Next week I am going to explain the process of removing the old aluminum window...

Walk-In Bathtubs - Safety And Independence

Walk-in bathtubs are just what the name implies. They are tubs for bathing that are designed for easy accessibility for the elderly or handicapped, no matter what their age.

Mobility Problems

Anyone who has had a knee or hip replacement are usually warned by their doctor not to sit down in a conventional bathtub, no matter how mobile they are after the surgery. People who suffer from arthritis find it hard to step over the side of a regular bathtub, and may have trouble rising from a seated position in the tub as well. Stroke victims, anyone with mobility problems, balance problems, or any sort of lower extremity disability have found walk-in bathtubs a godsend.

Something as simple as taking a bath can be a real challenge to some elderly folk as well as anyone who must use a wheelchair in order to be mobile. People who suffer from morbid obesity have trouble getting in and out of regular bathtubs. Mothers and fathers who must care for their adult handicapped children also have a huge challenge facing them every time their loved one needs a bath.

Independence For Handicapped

Anyone who is handicapped wants to feel that they are independent. They do not want to be a burden on other family16A7 members when the time comes for their bath, and have a hard time maintaining their dignity when they always have to ask someone to help them do something as personal as bathing.

Some of these people are unable to stand for long periods of time, so anything other than a quick shower is out of the question. With a walk-in tub, they can walk in without fear of falling, sit down, and enjoy a few quiet moments that a lot of us take for granted. It is well suited for anyone who has difficulty in moving.

Arthritis sufferers have found that walk-in bathtubs can help them to become more mobile. Some models come equipped with whirlpool jets and a heater, giving them the option of receiving hydrotherapy every time they take a bath.

Easy To Get Into

It is easy for anyone to get in and out of a walk-in bathtub. They are made with a low entry height, and instead of having to scale heights of over a foot to enter, as you must do with a regular tub, you merely step up a few inches. The door latches securely to prevent any of the water from leaking out. There is a built in seat in the tub, and grab bars to help you maneuver your way in and out. The inner surface is made from a non-slip material.

How To Find Them

Walk-in bathtubs are not big and bulky like you might think. Most models will fit in a 3 foot square space, in a corner or along a wall, so they are compatible with almost any sized bathroom.

Where can you these types of bathtubs? Your best bet is to investigate online if you want a quality product at a lower price than what you might find at a medical supply company or other dealer. There are several reputable manufacturers on the Web who offer to the public many styles, sizes and models of tubs. They offer generous guarantees and warranties, and most will help you find an installer for your tub, too. Your tub will be shipped directly to your door, ready for installation.

Walk-in bathtubs can make a relaxing bath possible for everyone.
